SashWise specialises in traditional timber sash windows for period, heritage and character properties across South West London and surrounding areas. From carefully restoring original sash windows to manufacturing new double glazed timber sashes and complete sash window boxes, we offer a range of solutions designed around the individual window and property.
Our timber sash windows combine traditional craftsmanship with modern improvements in thermal performance, draught proofing, glazing and security, while preserving the proportions and architectural character that make original sash windows so distinctive.
We work with high-quality timber, including Sapele hardwood and Accoya, selected for its durability, stability and suitability for external joinery. Whether your existing sash windows can be retained and improved or require replacement, we'll help you find the most appropriate solution for your home.
Historically, our new timber joinery, including sash windows, sashes and sash boxes, was manufactured predominantly from hardwood, typically Sapele. Sapele remains an excellent option for timber windows thanks to its durability, relatively low weight and tight grain, which allows it to take a high-quality painted finish.
We still offer Sapele as an option, but increasingly we recommend Accoya for our new timber sash windows and joinery due to its exceptional durability, dimensional stability and resistance to rot and decay.
Accoya allows us to combine the traditional appearance and craftsmanship of a timber sash window with a material engineered to provide excellent long-term performance.
Accoya over Hardwood
There are several reasons why Accoya has increasingly become our first choice of timber for new sash windows and joinery:
It's incredibly durable - sash windows are continuously exposed to changing weather conditions, making durability particularly important for external timber joinery.
It's highly resistant to water and rot - Accoya's treatment process significantly improves resistance to moisture, rot and decay.
It's a sustainable choice - Accoya is produced using timber sourced from sustainably managed forests and modified through a process called acetylation.
It's incredibly reliable - if buried or put in a bucket of water for 25 years Accoya will not rot, this is before it has had any finishes applied to it.
It's ideally suited to timber windows - its stability and resistance to swelling, shrinking and decay make it particularly suited to sash windows, where precision and reliable movement are important.
Accoya is a high-performance modified timber produced from fast-growing wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Through a process known as acetylation, the structure of the timber is modified to improve its durability, stability and resistance to moisture and decay.
These properties make Accoya particularly well suited to timber sash windows and other external joinery. Its dimensional stability means it is less susceptible to swelling and shrinking as environmental conditions change, helping sash windows continue to operate smoothly while also reducing the maintenance demands associated with less stable timbers.
For homeowners who want the appearance and character of traditional timber windows alongside modern durability and performance, Accoya provides an excellent option.
